At GRO, we’re passionate about creating greener, more sustainable urban spaces. That’s why we’re thrilled to announce our collaboration with the Open University (OU) on the Living Roof Live Lab, a pioneering research project that’s set to change how green roofs are designed, implemented, and understood across the UK.
This two-year initiative, funded by the Open Societal Challenges programme, will construct a state-of-the-art green roof lab atop the Stuart Hall building at the OU’s Walton Hall campus in Milton Keynes. Spanning 700m², the lab will feature innovative substrates like recycled concrete and limestone chips, alongside diverse vegetation, including Sedum and native grassland species. These setups will help us gather vital UK-specific data on how green roofs can tackle challenges like urban heat, water runoff, and biodiversity loss.
Green roofs have already proven their worth in cities worldwide, but the UK’s unique climate and urban environment mean we need tailored solutions. The Living Roof Live Lab will fill this knowledge gap, offering insights to inform future infrastructure policies and building designs.
What’s more, this project isn’t just about research; it’s about collaboration and community. Together with Bridgman & Bridgman LLP and a team of expert researchers, we’re creating opportunities for hands-on learning. From public workshops and citizen science projects to industry seminars, this initiative will connect GRO members, local communities, and environmental enthusiasts to the exciting world of green roofing.
But we can’t do it alone! GRO members could play a crucial role in making this project a success by providing expertise, materials, or sponsorship. Whether you’re a supplier, installer, or simply passionate about greener cities, there’s a way for you to get involved.
Let’s shape the future of green roofing together.
